I think communism ultimately wants to eliminate such things as consumerism, thus the need for money and thus the need to keep up with the Joneses. Communism wants to break away from the need for a class consciousness, and hence the need to stare down our noses at the less fortunate and jibe them to work harder, or hide behind some bogus facade of social darwinism.
It's about helping people out, getting them educated, making them productive and giving them the desire to contribute to the community;
It's not about looking out for #1 at the expense of everyone else.
