: "Class" analysis, if reasoned deductively from the premise of historical materialism, is not relevant. It's only relevant from a comprehensive and anti-foundationalist manner of looking at things.

anti-foundationalist? whassat?

: I live in one. So what. And your reference to "need" is just another representation of your values-imperialism. Who are you to tell someone else what they need; that comes from their value system.

You need air! My Bob! I'm a Value Imperialist! You need Water Someone, someone, stop me, quick, before I totally dominate Joel's life with my imperialism. D'oh! Or am I being essentialist, and assuming that you really exist, materially?

1:Since all of our consciousnessness is environmentally determinate, all our values are thus likewise socially determinate.
2:Since value is of and by itself a way for humans to interact, and form societies, values will reflect a social understanding of need. If someone, to paraphrase the Evil Fry & Luarie, were to suggest to you that they *needed* an Arse-Fondling CD player, you would luagh at them- Such a *need* is a plane abandoment of any relation to reality.

: JJ: You're presuming some objective moral standard. Public Choice Theory is a descriptive analysis of how people act in pursuing their own standards of value. Again, fully admit taht I moralize based upon my particular viewpoint, and you do the exact same thing.

Oh, is that what it is, I did wonder, well, sound slike a load of arse to me, for reasons detailed above. BTW_ what if my personal values included buggering small children- that all fine and dandy in your hyper relativist world?

Further, how do 'individual values' fit in with your all totalising theory of utility maximisation? Surely all their values are related to utility?

: Hmm, nothing of import to respond to.

Couldn't have put it better myself. now, I await with trepidation you mystifying response.
