Here is an excerpt from Alexander Cockburn's column in the December 31, 1990, Nation, commenting on the organizers of the Washington march:I wish that people would stop writing to (suggest)that today's leftists of principle should espouse the cause of Iraq and eschew critisism of Saddam Hussein. This is Marxism-Leninism-Bonkerism of a sort much savored by the Workers World Party, which seems to be the animating force behind the Coalition to Stop U.S. Intervention in the Middle East, decorated by Ramsey Clark.
Most people will not have heard of the Workers World Party, which, according to Cockburn, is the organization that has put together this new "anti-war" coalition. But I remember them from the sixties as the only Trotskyist splinter to endorse the Soviet invasion of Hungary in 1956. Thus, the spearhead of this season's "anti-war" demonstrations is the Marxist-Leninist party that defined itself by supporting the bloody invasion that took the lives of 30,000 Hungarians whose only crime was to want national independence and freedom.
