Day 123 - 09 May 95 - Page 10

  Q. Fair enough, I take that point, that is your point, but it
has been the subject of criticism for being unhealthy as a
kind of food that you are promoting, rightly or wrongly?
       A. We have been criticised wrongly, as was the case with
       the devastation of rainforests.

  Q. It is a fact, is it not, or are you aware of the fact, that
there have been official committees set up to look into the
possibility of banning children's advertising in America?
I cannot remember the name of the committee now?
       A. I am aware of the fact that committees have been set up
to review the use of children's advertising content and the
amount of advertising directed at young people.

  Q. Do you recall a particular committee -- this is from
recollection -- we have had evidence in the case about it,
or we have had comment about it -- which actually
recommended the banning of advertising to children in
America, and then there was a great deal of debate and the
bans were withdrawn; do you recall that?
       A. Specifically, I do not recall the specifics of that.
I do know that there have been elements in the community,
or in the community in the United States, that did not
approve of children's advertising. On the other hand,
there were others that did not take that same view. So, it
was a matter of debate and continues to be a matter of
       debate, in America.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: It may seem trite to say so, but when you say
"America" I am going to assume you mean the United States
of America, unless you say to the contrary.
       A. Yes.

  Q. Is that right?
       A. Yes, my Lord, United States.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I only say that because you obviously have
some responsibilities outside the United States?
       A. Canada, yes. Being more specific, I have referred to
       the United States.

MR. MORRIS: Just going back to the food issue, you are aware,
are you, of the Surgeon General's report, I think it was
1989, around that time, on the links between diet and
cancer, which firmly linked some elements of diet as a
cause of cancer? Are you aware of that?
       A. I am aware -----

  Q. Would McDonald's be aware of that when it came out?
       A. Pardon?

  Q. Would McDonald's have been aware of that when it came out?
       A. I am aware of the fact that there have been a number of
studies conducted into the impact of diet as a cause of
       cancer, yes.

  Q. Moving on to the animals' situation: presumably, there is
a great deal of criticism in America from some quarters
about the use of animals in food products and the
