New Zealand - McDonald's loses another link in its chain

A third McDonald's outlet on the North Shore has closed in less than a year, but the company says it is a one-off case.

McDonald's Link Drive restaurant closed earlier this month, joining the Takapuna and Milford outlets.

Its Takapuna outlet in the Westfield Shore City mall closed last October after 25 years, while the nine-year-old outlet in the Milford Shopping Centre closed in early November.

The company said in November that the two closures did not signal a rash of future terminations.

The Link Drive McDonald's opened on March 1, 1997, taking over from a Georgie Pie restaurant.

McDonald's Restaurants New Zealand spokeswoman Jo Hill says with another outlet in nearby Wairau Rd, the company took the decision to concentrate on just one restaurant, rather than spread resources over two outlets so close to each other.

The Link Drive outlet was owned by the company, not a franchisee, and staff have been moved to the Wairau Rd branch.

The world's largest restaurant chain still has six outlets on the North Shore. Golden arches shine in 30,000 outlets in 121 countries.
