My mistake: it was presumptuous of me to assume that they would gas US troops as revenge. It just occurred to me that there's an alternative explanation that makes perfect sense, and I should have read the articles more carefully. If this mission occurred in Laos, it's likely that these were US secret agents doing their jobs, and that they were killed simply for knowing too much about CIA drug-dealing operations in Laos. Thus calling them "deserters" could simply have beena ruse for business as usual.
