reading it anyway that may not be a problem.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Use a copy of mine because I can remember it
perfectly well. Do not put it in the folder because I will
ask for it back.
A. (Same handed) Thank you.

Q. It has got some underlinings on it but they do not disclose
the secret of the--

MR. MORRIS: Supplementary statement by Veggies Limited. March
3rd, 1994. "Our earlier statement ronald mcdonald's
versus Reggie the Veggie" -- actually I did not read that
bit out last time -- "made on the 21st October 1993 details
the threat of libel action made by McDonald's Corporation
against Veggies Limited in 1987. The statement explained
that Veggies limited was forced to make "correction and
apology" accepting that there was "no specific evidence
concerning the connection of McDonald's and the raising of
beef on former rainforests."

"Our statement also explained that we understood
McDonald's had subsequently admitted that they had used
beef from ex-rainforest areas and that Veggies Limited had,
in 1988, been pressed by McDonald's to make a statement
that was not true. We were therefore very concerned when
one of our researchers, Laura Waters, drew our attention to
the attached document "tropical rainforest" (reference
Envrain.Pm4/September 92) that she had received from
McDonald's in January 1994, in which they repeated the
false claim that they had no connection with the use of
ex-rainforest lands."

Can I just say that that material can be found in the
statement of Laura Waters which we did not need to read out
because it was accepted that it was a true document from
McDonald's, dated September '92 and handed out in 1994.

"Also attached is an extract from the transcript of a
debate broadcast on the campus radio station at
Loughborough University on the 8th December 1993 in which
Michael Matthews, McDonald's United Kingdom Director of
Quality, again repeated the assertion that McDonald's had
"never used rainforest beef anywhere in (McDonald's)
stores in central and South America". We believe..."

Can I just say about that -- well, I will come to that
in a minute. "We believe that the "correction and apology"
that Veggies Limited were forced to make in 1987 and the
statement made by Michael Matthews in December 1993 were
intended to bring into disrepute the educational work of
Veggies Limited. We also believe it to be very dishonest
for McDonald's to deceive the public by continuing to
circulate false statements concerning their use of
ex-rainforest beef. This supplement dated March 3rd 1994",
and that is your signature it?
A. Yes, it is.

Q. And you stand by that statement?
A. Yes, I do.
