Day 250 - 15 May 96 - Page 07

needed, why were you taking a video for evidential
       purposes?
       A. I think just to show for follow-up; that is all.

  Q. Actually, sorry, I have missed one out. In document No 99,
the third page, this is a memo from Welbeck Golan and
       Harris?
       A. Sorry, 99?

  Q. Yes, it is one before. It is the third page?
       A. Sorry, yes.

  Q. There is a memo from Welbeck Golan and Harris about the
London Greenpeace day of action 1990, and it is dated
stamped, or the date has been added, of 27th September. It
says, "Once again on October 16th London Greenpeace are
calling for people everywhere to protest against their
local branch of McDonald's. In addition, for the first
time they are planning a demonstration in London on
Saturday, 9th November against McDonald's to support the
two members of London Greenpeace who are being taken to
court by McDonald's for alleged libel." That part is
underlined. The note at the top that is in handwriting
       which is addressed to you?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Can you just explain what that is about and who that is
       from?
       A. It looks like Terry Carroll's writing. I think what he
is saying is he got Special Branch to get an assessment.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Can you keep your voice up?
       A. Sorry. The handwriting is Terry Carroll's. I think
what he is saying to me, 'I will get on to Special Branch,
       to get an assessment'.

MS. STEEL: What do you mean by 'assessment'?
       A. Right. Well, every time... If I go back to my police
station, every time we had a demonstration or knew you had
a demonstration you asked for a Special Branch assessment,
the numbers, the people likely to be involved, the groups
involved, and that is what he is saying he is going to do
       on this occasion.

  Q. Right. So whenever you had a picket at Head Office, or a
demonstration, whatever it might be, it would be standard
       practice to contact Special Branch?
       A. No. I mean, I am not trying to be critical here but
the demonstrations outside of Head Office were fairly
small, you would not bother Special Branch with things like
that. But a march, and this indicated it was going to be a
       march through the city...

  Q. Right.
       A. It would be normal then to ask for some kind of police
       assessment.

  Q. OK. To ask them for information about who the organisers
       were?
       A. Just ask for an assessment. You do not direct them,
