Day 131 - 06 Jun 95 - Page 04
day's work before he is called so far as his evidence is
concerned. But just brood on that over the next day or
two, and then let me know and let Mrs. Brinley-Codd and
Mr. Rampton know what you would like to do about it. You
have no need to give me an answer now. I just want you to
think about it and tell me what you suggest.

I have also read a recent letter which Mrs. Brinley-Codd
has written to you both about employment witnesses, and we
obviously have to discuss that at some time -- not too far
ahead.

MS. STEEL: There was just one thing I wanted to bring up. I do
not mean we are trying to say that we should have any
application this week, but on Saturday I received a letter
from the Local Government Ombudsman about a complaint
I have made, and they wanted to interview me on Friday
morning.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: This week?

MS. STEEL: Yes. I thought that we would probably be finished
with Mr. Purslow in time for me to be able to do that. So
I would prefer it if we did not have legal argument on
Friday.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I understand that. We will talk about that
again later. I am only raising it because, I am sure you
have not forgotten it, but I think it would be a good idea
if these matters were brought to a head fairly soon.

MR. MORRIS: Maybe it would be a good idea to have it after
Mr. Stein, because I do not think he will take the full two
weeks.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: If you are content with that, I am, subject
to anything Mr. Rampton wants to raise himself, if there is
anything, as long as you realise the obligation is on you,
as it were, to bring the matters back.

MR. MORRIS: I think it is good to set a time, because it forces
us to make preparations.

MR. RAMPTON: The only urgent matter, so far we are concerned,
is the employment witnesses, because we have to try to fill
up July. Mr. Brett is Colchester, so that does not add
anything to the witnesses that we should call. So is
Mr. Harrison. Mr. Turnbull does not call for any response
by us. If there are to be any others in addition to the
ones we have now and the ones we were given earlier, then
we do need to know as a matter of some urgency.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Mr. Morris has been very good on that, in my
view; he has told us today the additional matters.

MR. RAMPTON: We will organise a schedule of witnesses to deal
with those new ones in so far as we need to. Beyond that
at the moment, obviously, we cannot go. My Lord, as I say,
Mr. Purslow is here, if I may call him now.
