Day 124 - 10 May 95 - Page 05
actually created as a marketing tool?
A. Yes, as a matter of fact, my Lord, ronald mcdonald -- I
originally started my career in Washington DC and Ronald
McDonald was a character that one of our advertising
executives who worked for a local advertising firm came up
with and introduced to the franchiser that I worked for,
Oscar Goldstein, and suggested that we used the character
to promote, how shall I say, gatherings at -----

Q. I do not need the detail unless Mr. Morris or Ms. Steel
asks you more about it, but when was that?
A. I will say that was about 65/66, 1965/66. Again, he
was just a local hero. Willard Scott, who was an
international personality on NBC, was the first Ronald
McDonald. This was before he joined.

Q. But when you made your national push, was Ronald part of
that national push from the start?
A. No, not from the start; shortly thereafter. The
gentleman, Barry Klein, that introduced the character
locally, when he was promoted -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Do not worry. So that would be right at the
end of the 60s, would it, that Ronald came in, or early
70s?
A. Early 70s nationally. I could be off a year or two, my
Lord, but it is very close.

MR. MORRIS: Do you remember a situation in New York -- do you
remember criticisms of McDonald's nutritional, the typical
McDonald's nutritional meal -- sorry, I will start again.
Do you remember criticisms by professors of nutrition in
the early 70s of the typical McDonald's meal, hamburgers,
fries and shakes, and concerns at that time about the
effects of hamburger influenced diets on people's health?
A. I have very little recollection of that. As
I indicated earlier, I remember, you know, reading the book
and there were articles from time to time that appeared in
newspapers, but it was, to my knowledge, from what I can
recall, not a major issue. It was not -- it was not
something that was so noteworthy that it had a deleterious
impact on the sales of our product.

Q. But the criticisms that you had in the 80s that I think we
talked about yesterday, you acknowledged there had been
criticisms, whether they were right or wrong or large or
small?
A. Mmm.

Q. But what I am saying is you remember they do go back to the
70s; it did not just start in the 80s?
A. Well, the fact that you are, you know -----

Q. Do not take my word for it. I mean, do you remember there
have been criticisms of McDonald's food products going back
a substantial time; it is not just in the last decade or
anything?
A. I do not have any, you know, real recollection of those
criticisms that you have brought out.
