Day 115 - 06 Apr 95 - Page 20

       approve?
       A. I do not approve of the process at all. You know
that. But I really would have to see; there has been so
much debate. Again the Farm Animal Welfare Council would
tell you the background of this. The recommendations,
certainly until very reasonably, have been that animals
should be slaughtered singularly and out of sight of one
       another.

You can argue that is stunning part of the slaughter?
There are some people now who argue (and I myself feel
there might be something in this) that if they are
together, particularly if they are old friends, if you
like, then they are calmer in those conditions of stress.

I would have to see the actual circumstances, they vary so
much, and pigs are animals. As I say, in many ways you can
regard them like dogs, and some dogs would be very
apprehensive and some would be very vigorous; others would
be easier to handle. So I could only assess it by going to
       see it.

  Q. Dr. Long, you have the report of Dr. Gregory about this
operation. He did not see it in groups. He saw it I think
on the occasion he was they were being stunned singularly.
He was so impressed, was he not, by what he saw that he is
actually going to tell others how to do it?
       A. Yes, I saw that.

MS. STEEL: Only the initial part.

MR. RAMPTON: No, and in the stunning pen.

MS. STEEL: No, he was not impressed by what he saw in the
       stunning pen.

MR. MORRIS: He had six major criticisms.

MR. RAMPTON: I can show you the passage, if you want. I think
if are you going to make an objection, my Lord, if they are
going to object, then they should stand up and make an
       objection.

MR. MORRIS: We have been -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I think let us have this one out. Point out
to the part where you say that is wrong, Mr. Morris.

MR. MORRIS: We sometimes refer to the evidence of previous
witnesses. We have been told to quote -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I am asking you to point out to the actual
evidence. I have said let us have this out. Point me to
       the part concerned.

MR. MORRIS: In the statement, Mr. Rampton has already said, he
had six major criticisms of the slaughtering of pigs.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Just pause for a moment because if you will
       not look, Ms. Steel is.
