Day 115 - 06 Apr 95 - Page 16
of an attitude or attitudes on the behalf of the company
that grows and kills these pigs.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes.

MR. RAMPTON (To the witness): If you want to go inside,
Dr. Long, turn to the middle of the page, it is not
actually the middle page, it is the one before. It is a
picture like that with some pigs entering what we are told
is the lairage at the slaughterhouse. There is a lorry
outside marked "Bowes of Norfolk". Do you have that?
A. Yes, I must say that I have only just seen this, and
I am by training a scientist. This is advertising
material. I would need to know when the pictures were
taken, and I will emphasise again that I made myself
available to go and see this myself. I do not think that
it is possible for me to give a good answer for having this
sprung on me. It was not in the information that I was
given the day before yesterday, so I really had difficulty
with dealing with all of that, let alone standing here and
looking at someone's advertising brochure.

Q. You must understand, Dr. Long, that it is not the
responsibility of my people to supply you with material
which, arguably, the Defendants might have shown you before
you made your witness statement or before you came to give
evidence.

MS. STEEL: Except we did not have it before Dr. Long made his
witness statement and we only got it sprung on us -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I hope this is going to be our last day in
court together for about three weeks.

MR. RAMPTON: So sincerely do I.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I would rather on both sides avoid arguments
about this or that, just have questions asked and questions
answered.

MR. RAMPTON: My lord, I would not want it thought -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: You have made your reservation about it.
Mr. Rampton will ask you further questions on the basis of
what is shown or not shown in the photograph and I am sure
you will answer those questions.

MR. RAMPTON: If Dr. Long is uncomfortable with it, I will not
pursue it. Your Lordship has seen it and you have the
evidence Mr. Bowes about it. (To the witness): You did
notice, did you not, Dr. Long, that they do not at Bowes
use any hormone growth promoters or routine antibiotics;
you did notice that, did you not?
A. You actually raised that point and, if I might say,
this again gave me cause -- because in Mr. Bowes's evidence
-- and you must admit that you gave me a pretty stiff task
here, so I might have got some things wrong -- but on day
96 -- I will just read it out because I made some notes to
make it quicker for the court -- he made statements on this
matter on day 96, page 36, page 58 and page 59.
