Day 092 - 27 Feb 95 - Page 27

will not get sick. So, it is called a growth promoter
because the animals grow better because they are
healthier. They suffer less from diseases.

MR. MORRIS: Just to come back, we have heard that Sun Valley
puts antibiotics in the feed for broilers. You said that
would only be used in the US if a supplier was not
       efficient at controlling disease?
       A. I did not say that.

  Q. What did you say? What criticism are you making then of,
       say, Sun Valley?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Can you remind me? You say they are put in
the feed for broilers at Sun Valley. I remember that they
were put in -- there was evidence in relation to young
       chicks from the hatchery.

MR. MORRIS: That was different. That was in the hatchery and
also in the feed for the broilers, although it stopped,
I think it was, five or seven days before slaughter. There
       were regulations on that.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: If you say so. I will check later. My
       recollection was definitely in relation to the chicks;
I remember that because Dr. Gregory thought it was a good
idea; it avoided, for instance, some of the diseases which
might lead to lameness later on.

  THE WITNESS: That is correct.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: He thought that was quite an innovative
practice. I am not doubting that antibiotics might have
been used later in broilers. I remember the evidence,
however, it was not used for the last however many days it
       was before slaughter.

  MR. MORRIS: Yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: But I do not moment -- you may well be right
-- recall it being introduced as a matter of regular
procedure or routine into the feed of the broilers as they
       grew.

MR. MORRIS: I think it was. He mentioned the name as well.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Have you got the reference so we can get it
       right?

MR. MORRIS: It was towards the end of his evidence,
       Trimethoprim.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: What is the date? If you give me a date.

MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, I can find a reference to antibiotics in
the starter ration which is a drug called Furazolodone
which is day 91, 17th February. The reference I have found
is at page 35. It starts at page 35 at line 22. There is
       also something about Sulphadiozime.
