Day 065 - 09 Dec 94 - Page 13

  Q. Things like hoola hoops, skate boards, yo-yos -- I was not
a girl, but I remember my sister had a thing called a hoola
hoop. Do you remember those things?
       A. I am afraid you think I am rather younger than I am if
you think skate boards were around in my childhood -- they
       were not.

  Q. There was a great craze for skate boards, was there not?
       A. There might have been, but I am afraid it is rather
       post my childhood.

  Q. What about hoola hoops -- I mean the actual things which go
       round and round a person?
       A. No, we did not have hoola hoops. That preceded my age.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Do not worry whether you were actually a
child at the time. You were aware there were these crazes?
       A. Yes, I did.

MR. RAMPTON: You know of them and you remember yo-yos, I
       expect, things like that, yo-yos?
       A. Yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: They have been going forever.

MR. RAMPTON: I know, for a very good reason because they are
very clever things. Ms. Dibb, none of those things was
advertised to any significant extent, was it?
       A. I am not saying that advertising is the only
influence. I must come back to this. I think it would be
wrong of you to imply that I think all behaviour, all
crazes, are influenced by advertising. At the same time,
that is not to say that advertising does not have a
significant role and effect on these things. It is also
true to say that there are a number of crazes in the school
that are directly linked to advertising; catch phrases and
gingles from advertisements are, perhaps, the modern day
nursery rhymes. There was a particular advert that the ITC
withdrew which, I think, was for Tango Orange recently
where, I think, the phrase was: "You have been tango'd",
which showed someone being clipped rather hard around the
ear. This had taken on as a playground craze that there
were concerns for the safety of other children being hit by
each other. In fact, the advert was withdrawn. That is
just one example of how advertising can very much influence
       playground ----

  Q. It is the only example, is it not ----
       A. - playground fads and crazes.

  Q. It is the only example, is it not, the Tango one? It is a
very familiar one; it is the only one?
       A. The only example of what?

  Q. Of that sort of influence having come to the attention of
the ITC and the advertisement having been withdrawn?
       A. The concern there was with ----

  Q. Safety?
       A. - dangerous behaviour. I am making the point not that
