Day 064 - 08 Dec 94 - Page 21

MR. MORRIS: Can I just say, with respect, there are two
matters: There is the one of the detail which he says he
knows nothing about, but there is also the one of the
overall policy on the enforcement of checks or
specifications on their suppliers. Mr. Oakley is the best
person in the country, if not in northern Europe, to talk
about those matters which is -- I understand the point
       about the detail -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I am going to stand by my ruling. Make a
note, Thursday morning, 8th December; if you are unhappy in
the light of future evidence about it, you can raise it
       again.

MS. STEEL: Can I just ask one question before Mr. Morris
carries on: The people from McDonald's who make checks on
the farms and the slaughterhouses or whatever: You were
talking about Mrs. Crawford -- is she the only person that
       goes down?
       A. I did not say she went to the farms.

  Q. I thought you did say on an occasion she went to the farms?
       A. Well, she may have paid a visit from time to time; it
is not part of her brief.

  Q. OK. So they visit the slaughterhouses; is that right?
       A. Again from time to time. It is really as a check on
what McKey are doing because it is the McKey responsibility
to visit the farms and the slaughterhouses.

  Q. And in terms of Sun Valley?
       A. Sun Valley is a little different, as I explained to you
previously, because everything is within the one location.

  Q. Who goes down apart from I think you mentioned
       Mrs. Crawford?
       A. Keith Kenny.

  Q. Right?
       A. Who works for Mrs. Crawford.

  Q. Are they the only people that go down?
       A. From the Quality Assurance Department, yes. But in
terms of the buying department, the buyer responsible would
also go down -- I go down from time to time.

  Q. Do any of the people who make the visits have experience in
       the welfare of animals?
       A. Mrs. Crawford does.

  Q. What is her experience then?
       A. Well, I have told you just how diligent Mrs. Crawford
is when it comes to animal welfare. She cares about it
       personally and professionally.

  Q. But in terms of actually -----
       A. Is she qualified in animal welfare? No.

  Q. But, I mean, what is her experience? Is it just from
making those visits or does she have some background
