Day 056 - 28 Nov 94 - Page 07
conference, yes.

Q. Was one of the resolutions -- I just quote from resolution
H1, paragraph (c); it is from Mr. Hopkins's statement which
the court has -- "Considering the objectives of sustainable
management as stated in the statement of forest
principles", then it says "vis. Forest resources and forest
land should be sustainably managed to meet the social,
economic, ecological, cultural and spiritual needs of
present and future generations". Do you remember that?
A. I remember taht that statement was included in the
final report.

Q. Would you agree with that?
A. Yes, I think the whole environmental progress that has
been made over the years has led in 1993 to statements of
that kind being very relevant.

Q. Do you remember resolution H2, paragraph (b), I quote:
"Recalling the definition of biological diversity agreed
upon in the convention on biological diversity", it says,
"vis. 'Biological diversity means a variability among
living organisms from all sources including, inter alia,
terrestrial marine and other aquatic eco systems and
ecological complexes of which they are part. This includes
diversity within species, between species, and of
ecosystems'." Do you remember that?
A. I recall such a statement being included and it is a
statement of fact; it is not a statement of any programme
but a statement of fact.

Q. On a definition of biological diversity?
A. On a definition biological diversity.

Q. Would you agree with that definition?
A. I have no reason either technically or otherwise to
disagree with it.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: When you are reading from something like
that, take it very steadily, especially if the witness does
not actually have a copy in front of him. He has clearly
understood what you have read so far, but bear that in
mind.

MR. MORRIS: I presume you have read Mr. Hopkins's statement?
A. I have.

Q. Just on the word "sustainable" are you aware there were
complaints to the Advertising Authority on the use of the
word "sustainable" in advertising?
A. I am aware that the subject has been raised with the
Advertising Standards Association, yes.

Q. Are you aware that the ASA has a requirement for using the
word "sustainable" in terms of forests? I quote, just tell
me if you are aware of that: "The ASA requires
'documentation showing that the growth and production of
timber causes no damage to the environment'."
A. I think there is a good deal more to the statement than
that.
