Day 049 - 09 Nov 94 - Page 27
Q. You told us, I think a moment ago, that that particular
animal that was shown in the film was, in your view, still
alive when it was having its throat cut; is that right?
A. I know it was, because I know the people that filmed
it.

Q. Why choose that cow to put in that film?
A. Because, as the RSPCA survey showed, 53 percent of
young bulls are, as often as not, fully conscious when they
have their throats slit.

Q. 53 percent of cattle that are slaughtered, you said, are
not fully unconscious?
A. Are not fully conscious. Sorry, the captive bolt
pistol does not work in 53 percent of cases.

Q. You know of some evidence to suggest that that is true in
relation to the animals that are used for McDonald's
hamburgers, do you?
A. The video does not mention McDonald's. I am sorry, I
do not understand the question.

Q. You do not think that a Big Mac is a McDonald's product?
A. Of course I do, yes.

Q. And Chicken McNuggetts?
A. Yes.

Q. They were both mentioned in the programme, were they not?
A. Yes.

Q. The only other brand name which was mentioned in the
programme----
A. No, Chicken McNuggett was not. The Big Mac was. That
is the only product that is mentioned.

MR. RAMPTON: You will have to excuse me. The Chicken
McNuggett was mentioned. You said "Cherry Farm", something
or other, "McNuggett".

MR. JUSTICE BELL: It was McNuggett. It did not specifically
say Chicken McNuggett.

MR. RAMPTON: Does any other company use the brand name
McNuggett for its pieces of children?
A. I do not know.

Q. You know perfectly well that nobody would be allowed to, do
you not?
A. I really have no idea.

Q. That was a film aimed principally at McDonald's, was it
not?
A. No, of course it was not.

Q. Why did you bother to mention Big Mac and McNuggett, then?
A. The McNuggett term was just a general generic term of
the kind of small chicken pieces that children are
encouraged to eat in Britain.
