Day 046 - 04 Nov 94 - Page 28

Q. People have been saying, "Why don't you have salads"?
A. Yes.

Q. So in the first paragraph, when it says, "Rather than fight
a defensive war of attrition by responding to constant
nutrition attacks, let's not even deal with it. Rather, as
you suggest, let's try to develop a broad umbrella" -- this
"balance and moderation" position; yes?
A. Yes.

Q. Are there promotional problems with taking a different
position, which would be, "We are trying to improve the
healthiness of our products or our menu"?
A. I think that was inherent in the advertising that we
did. It was both moderation and balance and telling people
what, in fact, we had done with our products, lowering the
salt content in some aspects, and other things, changing
the oils that the food was cooked in.

Q. As from this time, this phrase "balance and moderation" is
that something that, since that meeting, has under-pinned
your approach to healthy eating?
A. Yes. Besides the changes that are being made in the
menu, the feeling that McDonald's can be a good part of a
balanced diet has always been a belief, and moderation and
balance and having McDonald's being a part of your diet are
the tenets that, I think, are discussed in this particular
memo.

Q. You use those phrases "balance and moderation" in some of
your promotional advertising?
A. Yes; we use them in some of our print advertising.

Q. Do you remember that, following that meeting, there was a
controversy about nutrition brochures? Do you remember
there was a controversy about nutrition brochures, all
stores having to have them?
A. I remember there was some discussion or controversy
about them in the stores.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Do you remember that or not?
A. Yes, I remember in general.

MR. MORRIS: Following that controversy, there was a
meeting -- in that thing, it is page 175, tab 35.
A. Yes.

Q. There was a meeting at the end of that year that you were
present at; 175.
A. Yes.

Q. Do you remember the meeting between Leo Burnett and
McDonald's?
A. Yes.

Q. You are number 1 on the list?
A. Number 2 or 3. I think it was in alphabetical order.

Q. Do you remember what was discussed at that meeting? If you
