Day 044 - 02 Nov 94 - Page 29

  Q. It is not one of the core menu items, though, of the whole
       Corporation?
       A. It is not. I do not believe it is in every market, no.

  Q. I cannot remember -- it is somewhere in the records -- what
year salads were introduced in America?
       A. It was around 1987/1988, I believe. But it is factual
information, and I am sure we can find out exactly when.
To the best of my remembrance, it is around that time
       period.

  Q. Have you ever done any national advertising in the States
       promoting your salads?
       A. Yes.

  Q. What percentage of your commercials or your budget went
       into that?
       A. I would not have any idea. We continually promote our
salads on somewhat of an ongoing basis.

  Q. When you said hamburgers, fries and drinks, I did note,
when we saw all the advertising, that with the exception of
occasional focusing on Chicken McNuggetts, the core did
seem to be what you said, which was hamburgers, fries and
soft drinks. Would you say that was the core, the
       fundamental core?
       A. Within the context of children's advertising, yes,
because that is what makes up a Happy Meal.

  Q. Right. That would generally be the same in most countries
in the world, so far as you know?
       A. Yes. Not every country, I believe, has Happy Meals,
but I believe that most every country has hamburgers and
       french fries and soft drinks.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Presumably, they are different sides of the
same coin: they form the basis of your Happy Meals because
they are your most popular meal?
       A. That is correct.

MR. MORRIS: Is it possible to have a few minutes?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: How long do you want? If you need five
minutes, we will have a five minute break.

MR. MORRIS: To be honest, I always find the five minutes very
       helpful.

                       (Short adjournment)

MR. MORRIS: Just sticking with this theme for the moment, the
court has heard that the World Health Organisation believe
that -- and I quote from their conclusion on page 157 of
their report of 1990 on Diet and Prevention of Chronic
       Diseases:

"Their prevention or reduction (of such diseases) is both a
social responsibility and an economic necessity."

I am sure the court will agree that the World Health
