Day 016 - 22 Jul 94 - Page 10

     1 A. I think it is a cup.

2 MS. STEEL: On this document that we have in front of us, the
chart, but going to the page before that, about the
3 dietary guidelines for Americans recommended by the US
Department of Agriculture and the Department of Health,
     4 Human Services?
              A. Yes.
     5
         Q. You said you thought that was helpful advice and quite
     6 explicit, I think?
              A. Well, let me just consult this copy.
     7
MR. JUSTICE BELL: Page 64 of our bundle.
8 A. I have a poor photocopy. I am just looking at the
original. Yes, that is right. These are the US dietary
9 guidelines published in 1990, and you have to remember
that they were directed at people in the United States of
    10 America.

11 MS. STEEL: The amount of detail that is there is quite
considerably more than the detail that appeared in that
12 advertising series. I appreciate that this is a later
guideline but, no doubt, the original US guidelines had
13 further advice in them as well?
              A. Well, I do not have the advertising material in front
    14 of me.

15 Q. It is on page 103 of bundle VI.

16 MR. JUSTICE BELL: Do you mean the Time one?

    17 MS. STEEL: Yes.
              A. Yes.
    18
         Q. "More about your balanced diet". It is about five to six
    19 pages.
              A. "More about your balanced diet and McDonald's good
    20 food".

21 Q. There are seven keys to building a good diet.
              A. Yes.
    22
         Q. There is not very much detail there, is there?
23 A. Well, it gives the key guidelines, does it not?

24 Q. To somebody who did not really know much about nutrition
that would not help them that much, would it? It is not
25 as explicit, for example, as "choose lean meat, fish,
poultry without skin and low fat dairy products and use
    26 fats and oils sparingly"?
              A. No, that would follow.
    27
         Q. It is not as explicit as the point on sodium; it is not as
28 explicit as: "Many Americans eat more salt and sodium
than they need. For some people high blood pressure can
29 be associated with high dietary sodium along with other
              factors"?
30 A. Yes, again I think it is also important to look at the
rest of that advertisement, because it goes on to explain
