full statement:
You should know that our research had been dated 1983 and 1984. The film "Jungleburger" had been released in 1985. I have to mention this as there could be some chance the things had changed in Latin America through the years: for example I rememeber that in 1987 Burger King had stated and promised NOT to import any more meat from Costa Rica in the US Market.
CONCERNING YOUR PARTICULAR:
We were not in contact with the Costa Rica ranchers or meat industry in 1986. We had researched in 1983 and we filmed statements in 1984 in Costa Rica. Several persons convinced us that meat from Costa Rica reaches the US-meat plants supplying the McDonald's franchises in the US.
The cattle farmers Hugo Ribera and Carlos Urcuyo Barios for example are both owners of forests and herds. They sell to Coop Montecillos or as well directly (C. Urcuyo) through packers to Florida. They stated the meat is there to be used for Burger King and McDonald's. We had filmed H.Ribera while deforesting his farming areas and he explained to us for what reason he has to expand the export of meat. Dr Rodolfo Quiros Guardia, Gerente General of Coopemontecillos R.L. and Sergio Quintana, Director de mercadeo (Sales) from the same plant stated in front of our camera that they are selling meat to the US-meat plants supplying McDonald's-USA. Alberto Jose Amador Zamora, president of Federation de Camaras de Ganaderos de Costa Rica (Cattle Ranchers Federation) confirmed that quite reasonable amounts of Costa Rican beef had been sold to McD suppliers in the USA-market in 1982-1984. Donald Monroe, Gerente General of GISA (meat factory) explained to us while McDonald's USA is not willing to inform about its imports from Costa Rica. Dr E.A. Brandt, from the promotion department of the Ministry of Agriculture in San Jose confirmed in front of our tape and camera in 1984, that McDonald's-USA and Burger King-USA are both buying through middlemen for their contract firms beef for fast food on one hand, while on the other hand the suppliers in Costa Rica (ganaderos) are still deforesting to expand their business while their income decreases permanently...... I could continue and mention about 2-3..... (line missing)
supplemetary statement:
Further to my Statement of 15.7.1993, I wish to add the following:
* I myself was present at the interviews made for JungleBurger with Sergio Quintana, Quiros Guardia, Alberto Zamora, Hugo Ribera and Carlos Barios.
* I have the original uncut recordings of the above interviews and I am prepared to bring them to the UK court.
* I have sent the transcripts of these interviews to the defendants and can say they are a true record from the tapes.
