Well, as this is my first post here I'll just intoduce myself - I'm 15 and I work at a McDonald's in Sydney, Australia.Anyway, though I think it really depends on which store you work at, some are shocking. I've heard plenty of horror stories - for instance, it was on the news recently that a kid working there a few years ago had been killed at work - there was a frayed wire behind the fry vats, and when he touched the metal basket he was electrocuted.
Some of the material on the McSpotlight website is out of date, but unfortunately most is accurate - I have arrived for a rostered shift, only to be sent home. I've been asked to do things that break government safety regulations - standing on the top rung of a ladder, heavy lifting, that sort thing. Most of the time I just refuse, but they get another employee to do it.
What I do is try and make sure that the new employees know about their rights and encourage them to stand up for themselves, but I have my work cut out for me as most of them don't care. But you can't go up against a corporation like McDonald's because they'll just sue you. So you have to do the little things. At least, that's what I do because it's all I can do.
Anyway, I've put in way more than my two cents on this topic and I don't even know if I've made sense. Oh, and please tell me if there are no paragraph breaks in this and I'll use the appropriate html codes next time.
