To use an analogy I've used before; if you run a motor on high-octane fuel at full throttle for a long time, you'll destroy the motor. While the motor is working; yes, you will get a greater return, but the motor will not last nearly as long.
Substitute "global capitalism" for "fuel" and "Earth" for "motor".
We're burning up tomorrow's resources in an ever-accelerating race to make more money today. Which means that when tomorrow arrives, the machine of global capitalism will suddenly start throwing sprockets.
(Will it be the Japanese part of the engine that gives up first?)
Global capitalism may generate a higher short-term yield for the few, but it's not a sustainable way of living. The major worry to my mind is that we, as a society, have become so dependent on our luxury toys that we'll be up the creek without them.
: It is a pity that human greed gets in the way of a positive re-distrubution of wealth in a country like the UK or US.
So change the system. Simple. *grin*
(Of course, I know it's not as simple as that. But you must start somewhere.)
