: Nonsense. The purpose of a State, as Anatole France noted so long ago, is to take wealth from one set of people and give it to another. Almost everywhere this flow goes from the working people to the rich. It's time this flow went the other way.

I 100% disagree with that assertion but I dont think we'll get anywhere debating the purpose of the state. I dont believe government should involve itself in moving any money around. I'll conceed that some form of taxation is needed to run the government, but big government as we have seen time and time again is a bad idea.

: At least welfare provided the people with some compensation for the world they build, the same world the super-rich claim as their own. The people are deprived of the "fruits of their labor" because they have failed to overthrow the owning classes, the classes that rip off their labor, day in and day out. Most welfare recipients are also working people. Welfare at least provides the people with a little return on that same labor.

Im not sure which USA you are from but most welfare recipients are NOT working people. Havent we seen time and time again that when people are giving things they dont take care of them, but when they earn it and it is theirs they tend to do the upkeep (government housing).

: Welfare encourages people to survive on the insufficient wages they're earning. Handouts mean sharing, the mark of a better society. They're only "demeaning" to people like Dan who want the super-rich to own everything and whose arguments thrive on false stereotypes of welfare and work.

Does that make me part of the super-rich? If so where do I go to get my check? I see the false stereotypes day in and day out, living in DC. I went to school in downtown DC and through school and church have worked in the inner city. Given I've had a few advantages but I'll still be paying of my school loans for the next decade. I dont live in an ivory castle saying "let them eat cake". I live in a real world and have dealt with many real people. People dont want handouts. They want to make something of themselves for themselves (possibly one of the reasons why communism will never take off).
