food service and retail don't have great reputations as employers

An observation from yours truly yesterday: I was eating dinner at the local Golden Corral buffet. I could be wrong but the image I saw was quite suspect. I thought to myself Gee it must be screw-off Monday!! I saw much of the server staff just walking back and forth and it looked like they weren't doing anything. One of the male servers was standing around the tables just a few feet from me just twirling a used rag. I had to swerve around him when I returned from the dessert station.

One of the young female servers was "advised" by a supervising waitress to be on the lookout at one of the "high traffic" stations. The only server who I saw doing her job was an immigrant who appeared to be my age. She served my table. When I left, I tipped her $2.

I can't pass judgment on Sherri, but you have to wonder if she is one of those clerks who goes slower than a snail. By my experience Wal-Mart and Kmart have plenty of those. I can't help but wonder if they ain't the ones who holler the loudest about how lousy their employers are and how nasty the customers are. True food service and retail don't have great reputations as employers, but there's more than one side to every story. I knew about a substitute UPS courier who was a real asshole. Wonder if he was the loudest protester at the picket line?

Mike.
