You're right, not all convicts are 'scum.' But she didn't mean that. Since I'm her spouse, I can tell you that she was upset by the 'so much for...starving children' comment. To her, someone who jokes about starving children AND is a convict, must not be too great of a person (As a nurse and volunteer, both abroad and in US, she has watched children die in her arms).
She has a good sense of humor, Quincunx(if you're reading this), but there's a difference between good sense of humor and tasteless sense of humor, know what I mean?
