There was a demonstration against the first McDonalds in Rome when it opened over 10 years ago, thousands of people ate spaghetti with tomato sauce in the street, saying it was just as fast and much better (especially with fresh basil - ymmm).

Travelling in Italy, you can usually find 'pizza al taglio' places where you can have a slice of pizza - and a glass of wine if you want - for cheaper than McMerda. There are many vegetarian options.
