For a wake up call try getting a hold of Jeremy Rifkin's "The End of Work".

Extending Lark's point- automation will in the near future enable more production than it is possible to consume. The crises of over-production by a smaller and smaller workforce, combined with a growing number of lower paid jobs, seems a looming inevitability. We will be waking up to a nightmare.
