Piper: Marx thought that freedom would be brought to the worker by history. He treated freedom merely as a final end, not a force in history. Workers don't achieve liberation, it is brought to them by the forces of history.

Marx's failure to see freedom as an end in itself, meant that
despotism could be erected in his nameas a necessary force to bring freedome to the workers.
