In the Blue Mountains area of New South Wales, Australia, we recently fought and won a battle against the establishment of a McDonalds in our main town, Katoomba. Now the threat has raised its head again, and this time it's KFC and Pizza Hut as well as Maccas. If allowed by our local Council, these outlets will form a ribbon of blight along the highway as it enters the town.
The Blue Mountains is a designated National Park and is likely to get World Heritage status. We will fight the latest threat by arguing that we have a unique environment here, and it is that very uniqueness which we must keep if we are to remain attractive to tourists. There are plenty of charming local cafes and takeaway food shops: we do not need franchises that serve the same food as everywhere else.
We would like to know if people anywhere else in the world have fought the encroachment of fast food outlets in unique areas such as national parks. We believe we could start a worldwide campaign among people who live in similar areas.
