Aren't we already punishing OURSELVES by sending these people to jail?

:Stuart: You politicized this event faster than any two-bit politician and ranted ever so much more futiley.
That little girl died on account of low life, drugged out piles of human garbage who left several loaded weapons in reach of a six year old boy…..

DDN: I thought drug addiction was an "illness" like having the flu or having cancer. Why do we want to punish and hate people for being sick? Also, according to christianity, to which you yourself subscribe, these "low life drugged out piles of garbage" are bound for heaven if they simply believe in Jesus. What right do you have to pass such harsh judgements on people that God might consider worthy of eternital life in heaven?

:Stuart: ….You'd think even a doctrinaire such as yourself might reflect on individual responsibibly for half a minute before trying to lay this sorry, irresponsible behavior off on a corrupt system.
I mean really, Floyd. At what point do we absolve people of their rotten choices in life?

DDN: Choices? You mean like being born black? Being born poor? Growing up with drug addicted caretakers? Who were you planning on blaming had this kid waited until he was 25 years old to shoot somebody? At what point do past circumstances beyond our control magically disolve and become irrelevant?

:Stuart: These people (not the natural father or mother) were doing drugs in front of this kid daily. There were drugs in the house all the time. Loaded guns were where the kid could find them.
You're not going to judge that as abject depravity? You're going to attempt to excuse them by citing the influences that allegedly created them and their lack of judgement?

DDN: What percentage of the population would you like to see in jail before you’ll begin to entertain the possibility that our society inspires irresponsible behavior and creates criminals?

:Stuart: I have no idea whatsoever how Nike and McDonalds find themselves even remotely attatched to this issue.

DDN: That’s what scares me so bad about conservative western mindsets. There’s this innate inability to consider events in the context in which they occur, a uncanny disdain for the interconectedness of life, an ugly laziness that insists upon seeing every issue in a vacuum.

:Stuart: …..Way long stretch, dude. If you're not inclined toward swift punishment for these irresponsible adults as a practical reaction to their poor behavior, you can only be hoping to create a system that it's going to produce superior humans that won't make these kinds of choices. Well, you're going to pine away for many long, dark nights, I expect.

DDN: Superior human = Someone who isn’t hooked on crack and letting their six-year-olds have guns?
That’s what I call a "way long stretch".

If our society has the power to inspire poor behavior, doesn’t it also have the power to inspire good behavior? Otherwise, what’s the point of punishing these people? If its not going to change them, if its not going to discourage others from doing drugs and keeping guns in reach of children, what’s the point of spending yet another $50,000 - $100,000 per year to punish them? Sounds like we’re just acting out of frustration and hopelessness.
