Day 273 - 03 Jul 96 - Page 28

MS. STEEL: Do you want to go through naming the pages in the
       order that they come in?
       A. It is probably not critical.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I do not think that is necessary. As long
as I understand it is just as it was handed out.

MS. STEEL: I just thought it might be helpful because when we
have only got the transcript, or anything like that, and
then at least it is on the transcript.

MR. MORRIS: It is all right. I have got a spare copy. Just go
through it formally. The front cover is the same as the
London Greenpeace fact sheets, with the picture. The
second page, this leaflet is asking you "... to think" etc.
The third page, "Hungry children and fat cattle, choose
       life."
       A. That would have been added by Veggies.

  Q. Fourth page, "50 acres minute." Fifth page, "getting the
chemistry right." Sixth page, "what is your poison" box,
the first box. Seventh page, the end is, "who made this
leaflet, London Greenpeace group." And then the last page
"Veggies information." Added by Veggies, yes?
       A. That is right.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Now, what I am going to do is put this, as I
now have it, at the beginning of 208. Anyone else can do
what they wish with it, but that is what I am doing and I
have written on a note to the effect it says "produced by
       Mr Smith".

MR. MORRIS: Yes, it is, in fact, just the pages in 208 folded
       together.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Well, I understand that, but in case it is of
significance when there is any discussion of the evidence
and what any witness actually saw being held, or handed
out, that is what I have got.

MR. MORRIS: Right. That is great. I will carry on reading.
It will all become clear. Reading from the statement:
"On 8th October 1987 Veggies Limited received a letter
from Barlow Lyde and Gilbert, solicitors instructed by
McDonald's Corporation at Oakwood, Illinois. The letter
demanded that Veggies Limited should publish "correction
and apology" specifically with reference to the allegation
that McDonald's restaurants were implicated in the
destruction of rainforests. While seeking advice on the
issues raised by the letter, details of the Veggies Limited
position reached the journal "Peace News". "Peace News"
published an article on 30th October 1986. Is that
       correct?
       A. No, it is a typing error there. Of course, it was
October 1987 that article would have appeared.

  Q. Right. So we can change that to 1987. "...which pointed
out that in their letter of the 8th October McDonald's
solicitors had only asked for a retraction of the
