Day 259 - 10 Jun 96 - Page 11

  Q. Do you see in the first paragraph that is on that page --
it actually starts on the previous page ---
       A. All right.

  Q. -- the seventh line down, it says:

"We received a threatening letter from them (i.e.
McDonald's) right at the beginning, but we replied saying
we would continue and they could do what they liked."

       Do you remember reading that?
       A. I remember reading it. I do not know whether I have
read it since it has gone into the documents. That did
catch my eye. But, to my knowledge, you did not reply.

  Q. But you did not ask the solicitors to make a thorough check
about whether or not London Greenpeace had, in fact,
       replied?
       A. Oh, yes.

  Q. You did ask them?
       A. Yes.

  Q. And they said that -----
       A. They said "no".

  Q. After reading that, would you agree that the situation
seems to be that London Greenpeace did reply, but that
Barlow's did not get the letter, or something.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Well, you cannot say?
       A. I cannot say.

MRS. JUSTICE BELL: How can he possibly say?

MS. STEEL: Bearing that in mind, what was written there, would
you not think it was worth contacting London Greenpeace --
       again? This was in 1988.
       A. Well, if you remember, I have said on several occasions
it is my memory, and I am still sure, that we did.

  Q. OK. There is no evidence of that. You said that the 1987
picket was much the same as the others, that it was
       4 o'clock to 6 o'clock?
       A. It started late.

  Q. Sorry?
       A. It started late.

  Q. Yes; and that it was a perfectly normal day. Can you have
a look at tab 18 in this bundle, please? This is a leaflet
       from 1987.
       A. Right.

  Q. Do you see it says: "Friday, October 16th, World Day of
Action against McDonald's, picket of the Head Office,
       8 to 10 a.m."?
       A. No, it was in the afternoon, definitely.
