Day 250 - 15 May 96 - Page 26
I do not know.

Q. Right. Anyway, you went on to say that Mr. Hartley had
expressed concern if he pulled out all his operatives at
once, and asked for it to be spread over a period of time.
Why should he think that they would be noticed if they were
all pulled out at once?
A. That is not a question I can answer, that is what he
thinks.

Q. But, I mean, he was asking you to carry on paying for
something?
A. I did not mind that.

Q. You did not mind?
A. No. If he wanted to protect the security of his agents
and that would take 3, 4 months, I think they had earned
it.

Q. By that stage, Mr. Nicholson, you say that you were only
aware of Mr. Bishop -- Mr.?
A. Spears.

Q. Russell and Mr. Pocklington?
A. No, not at that time I was not. I did not know them
until much later. The only person I knew, the only inquiry
agent I knew, at the time we decided we had enough to go
for a writ, way past the time I pulled them all out, the
only person I knew was Clare.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: What you said was that the reports referred to
'A', 'B', 'C' and 'D', and you said something yesterday,
without turning up my note, that you thought there were a
maximum of about four of them?
A. There was an 'A', 'B', 'C' and 'D' that I received from
Kings, so there was at least four. The others referred to
themselves sometimes by a Christian name, 'John did this',
and that was Bishops people. I do not know how many, I
have no idea how many people they used.

MS. STEEL: 'John did this'?
A. Well, I mean, I use that as an example. I do not know
if one of them was called John.

Q. You were aware of four being employed by Kings?
A. I think we got the date, we may have got the way, I do
not know, but I think we got the date.

Q. You were aware of others employed by?
A. Bishops.

Q. Apart from Mr. Clare, who you had met?
A. Yes.

Q. How many others?
A. I do not know.

Q. Four or five?
A. I have no idea.
