Day 250 - 15 May 96 - Page 24

       A. That is what I told them: nothing illegal and nothing
       improper.

  Q. Right. Included in that would have been an instruction not
to take any letters that had been sent to?
       A. No, just as it was said, nothing illegal, and nothing
improper. I did not include anything else about that,
       those were my words.

  Q. Right. But then when you did receive information that they
were taking letters sent to Greenpeace you then gave a
specific instruction that it was not to happen again?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Right. That would be because it was something that you
considered was covered by your original instruction?
       A. Yes, and I did not approve of what they had done.

  Q. Do you remember when it was that you gave that instruction?
       A. No. I remember it happening, I am afraid I cannot
remember when during the inquiry it took place.

  Q. You do not remember whether it was towards the beginning or
       the end?
       A. No, sorry.

  Q. Or middle?
       A. No.

  Q. Was it around the time you met Mr. Clare?
       A. I cannot remember.

  Q. When you became aware that letters had been taken by these
private investigators did you give express instructions
that they were to be returned and give apologies, or
       anything like that?
       A. No.

  Q. Did you do either of those things?
       A. No.

  Q. Did you make any kind of inquiries as to what happened to
       the letters?
       A. No.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I thought you said before it was one letter.
       Did I miss-remember?
       A. No, no, I thought that, on the occasion I was talking
about, I thought it was just one letter.

  Q. Ms. Steel keeps saying 'letters', but I thought you said
       you knew of one letter?
       A. Yes, my memory tells me that on the occasion I knew
about there was only one letter. There may have been more
than one, but I felt it was only one letter.

MS. STEEL: Right. Did you make any inquiries as to what
       happened?
       A. It remained with the solicitors.
