Day 250 - 15 May 96 - Page 12
On that day it was Bishops' turn.

Q. Right.
A. They had contacted Mrs. Brinley-Codd... I think they
had... Yes, they must have done, and asked, suggested,
they should bring Clare with them.

Q. Right.
A. I remember Mrs. Brinley-Codd rang me up and said, "Do
you mind" and I said, "Well, I am not happy". I did not
want to meet any of the operators but if they feel it would
be useful, OK.

Q. Do you know why they thought it would be useful?
A. No, I cannot think of that at all.

MR. RAMPTON: That is far enough. It sounds to me we are about
to enter privileged territory.

MS. STEEL: I just wonder why he met this particular one as
opposed to the others?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: What? However interesting it might be, you
cannot ask generally of any communication between the
solicitor and anyone else. If you think there are special
circumstances which mean you can raise it first so that it
can be canvassed before we get into it.

MS. STEEL: Did you speak to him while you were at this
meeting?
A. Yes.

Q. Did you ask him questions about what he had observed and
what he had done whilst he was infiltrating the group?
A. Probably, I cannot remember. But probably.

Q. Do you know anything else about Mr. Clare as a result of
that meeting?
A. I am sorry, in what way?

Q. Was Mr. Clare considered someone who you were not really
sure whether he was reliable, whether his information was
reliable, and that was the reason you were meeting him?
A. No.

Q. You cannot remember the specific reason why you met him
rather than any of the other investigators?
A. No.

Q. Do you remember when it was you met him?
A. Not precisely. I would have thought it was round about
mid-year, June.

Q. That would be June 1990?
A. 1990, yes.

Q. Presumably, you remember it being summer?
A. No, I do not. I just... It was towards the end of the
Bishops' observations.
