MR. MORRIS: I just want to check if I have any further
questions. There was one final question actually -- no,
I will leave it. No further questions.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes. We will have our 5-minute break then.

Cross-examined by Mr. Rampton

Q. Dr. Carriere -- this is not meant in any offensive way at
all -- by training you are a political scientist?
A. That is correct.

Q. Not a botanist, a biologist, a geographer or a
climatologist?
A. No, I am not.

Q. Your studies in Costa Rica -- correct me if I am wrong --
have been, as it were, in relation to the social and
economic effects, largely speaking, of various kinds of
activity including agriculture; is that right?
A. That is correct. I would qualify that by saying that
I have also been concerned with the politics behind the
deforestation.

Q. That I well understand. Are you labouring under an
impression that McDonald's owns land in Costa Rica?
A. I have no such impression.

Q. No. Your only source for McDonald's rainforest policy --
whatever rainforest may mean in that context -- are the
statements of David Rose; is that right?
A. Plus McDonald's own Public Relations output.

Q. Yes. Are you also under the impression that McDonald's in
the United States uses Costa Rican beef?
A. I have no information about that.

Q. Thank you. Only really, I think, one other thing then -- a
couple of other things. Do you know professor Daniel
Janssen?
A. I have met him once or twice at conferences.

Q. Is his, so far as you are concerned, reputation as an
expert on Costa Rican matters something on which we can
safely rely?
A. Yes.

Q. Then, as I say, only one other matter -- have you those
pages from the Tropical Science Centre book?
A. The one called USA ID Contract?

Q. Yes, that is the one.
A. I do.

Q. Written, amongst others, by Hartshorn and Tosi?
A. Correct, yes.
