Day 242 - 29 Apr 96 - Page 21
MR. MORRIS: I had to hand one in. It is in a book entitled
"Tropical Rainforest, Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow". The
map is there from Sader and Joyce, 1988. Looking at those,
would you accept the accuracy of ---
A. Yes, I would.

Q. -- that?
A. Yes.

Q. If we note that the deforestation of the Nicoya Peninsula
principally seems to have occurred after 1950?
A. That is correct.

Q. While I think of it actually, does it mean that because
there are white areas that there is no forest in those
areas?
A. No, not entirely. It means that these areas failed to
meet the definition of a forest, and the definition of a
forest is phrased in terms of density of growth.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I cannot help noticing that these ones are,
effectively, identical to the Cedla ones.

MR. MORRIS: Yes. They are identical, but the usefulness is the
Sader and Joyce ones have a 1983 additional one. If you
notice, the deforestation in the San Isidro region -- there
seems to have been a substantial amount between 1977 and
1983; is that correct?
A. Yes, that is correct. That is generally known among
people in the field.

Q. Right.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: What do I call this map, these ones?

MR. MORRIS: That is the Tosi deforestation maps.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Those are Tosi as well?

MR. MORRIS: It is in the Tosi documents. All the documents
that I handed up this morning are all from this one
document with the heading with the front cover.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes.

MR. MORRIS: Right. I will just see if there is anything
further. (To the witness): There was something else to
ask you about. Again in those Tosi documents, just refer
to page 26, there is a description on the right-hand side,
a number of descriptions, but the description of tropical
wet forests, and at the bottom it says -- this is on the
right-hand side in the middle of the page, the last
sentence -- "Tropical wet forest is the most species rich
life zone in Costa Rica". Does that accord with your
understanding?
A. Yes, it does. It is not the only species rich type of
forest but it is the most species rich.

Q. Right. That is on page 26 on the right-hand side in the
middle of the page, the last sentence of paragraph (3) or
