Day 242 - 29 Apr 96 - Page 20

MR. RAMPTON: I will tell your Lordship just in a moment.
I think it is written underneath the map.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I completely misheard. I have been calling
it "Cedla" because that is what is on the fax and that is
where it came from.

MR. MORRIS: Actually, the one on the fax is a slightly
different map and that could be called the Cedla one, but
this is one which we disclosed from a text book.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Where do we get its title?

MR. RAMPTON: Underneath it, it says, "Loss of primary forest,
Costa Rica, 1914 to 1983", then a bracket -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: "Sader"?

MR. RAMPTON: "Sader and Joyce".

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I will call that the "Sader" map.

MR. MORRIS: The one behind the Carriere statement that he faxed
was actually correctly titled "Cedla". That is a different
map from the -----
A. That is the Cedla fax machine. That is my institute,
of course.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Sorry?
A. It is my institute.

Q. Yes, I understood that.
A. Yes.

MR. MORRIS: But this map is probably more helpful because it
has five maps showing the deforestation process. Have you
a copy of that map?
A. Yes, I do.

Q. Would you accept the Sader and Joyce 1988 map as being as
accurate as you are likely to get?
A. Yes.

Q. We note on that map that the deforestation of the Nicoya
Peninsula seems to have predominantly occurred between 1950
and 1961 -- certainly from 1950 onwards?
A. I am sorry, I am on the wrong map here. I am looking
at -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: If you turn on about three pages from there.
A. I am on the deforestation in Guanacaste.

Q. Turn on about three or four pages until you come to a page
which you have to hold the other way up which has five maps
of Costa Rica together and then one of Central America. It
looks like this. It is about four pages after your map,
Dr. Carriere.
A. I have one now, thank you.
