Day 242 - 29 Apr 96 - Page 18

  Q. Liberian, Northern Guanacaste?
       A. Yes, I have it. Yes, yes, that is the environs of
Liberia in the 1906s were still largely tropical moist
forests, pre-montane moist forests. "Pre-montane", of
course, meaning moving up the mountain.

  Q. Yes, I understand. Going down to south of Quepos, in the
documents, am I right or wrong that the whole area around
south of Quepos and inland is characterised as wet forest
or rainforest on this map, of one sort or another.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: South of where?

MR. MORRIS: Quepos. We are talking about the San Isidro
region, which is, I think, half way between Quepos and the
beginning of the Ossa Peninsula and inland, probably just
south of the road. But that region, if you like, which is
inland from Quepos, and south of it, seems to me to be
characterised as either pre-montane rainforest in this map
or lower montane rainforest, a tropical wet forest. That
would come in your general category, would it, of
       rainforest?
       A. Yes, it would, at least -- well, in the 60s, again
I cannot put a percentage on it, but a fair amount of that
land was already occupied by banana production and palm
trees to produce palm oil, but not all of the area had been
       deforested.

  Q. If we just look at the deforestation in that region -- let
us have a look at the best use of the map -- in the
       documents I disclosed today ---

  MR. RAMPTON: Page 29.

MR. MORRIS: -- page 29, thank you, the documents I disclosed
today -- I think you have put it behind your Cesca
       statement?
       A. The area handbook?

  Q. No, not that one, the Tosi documents.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: The one which look like this?
       A. Yes, OK, I have it.

MR. MORRIS: I have actually disclosed two copies of that
page 29 and the second one behind it I have put a little
marking on it, a black line, which seems to me to
correspond to the road from the coast to San Isidro. Can
you see on the map? There should be two copies of the map,
the second copy of the map ---
       A. Yes, I have the second copy.

  Q. -- should have a little black line on it?
       A. Yes, I see the black line.

  Q. It seems to me to correspond to that road. Would you
accept those maps as according with your understanding of
the progress of deforestation to the north of that road
along the coast and up inland?
