Day 242 - 29 Apr 96 - Page 15

some years. I spent five years trying to get out the data
       at that time, I remember.

MR. MORRIS: This map says at the bottom "by Joseph Tosi"?
       A. Yes.

  Q. But the figures contained in that information, the kind of
information in that chart would be available, would it, for
other sources as well as from the census?
       A. It would but Tosi's team is as reliable as you will get
       in Costa Rica.

  Q. Right. If we just note that on that chart the percentage
of farmland in pastures has gone as a percentage of
       farmland?
       A. Yes?

  Q. Has risen dramatically to where it is almost three-quarters
of the farmland is now under pasture?
       A. That is correct.

  Q. Would you accept that?
       A. That is correct up to 1990. That is correct.

  Q. Right. Okay.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: The reason I put what I did is that from 1970
onwards, they are projections, are they, or are they
actually based on figures since then?
       A. They are based on partial figures. They are not
projections, neither are they the result of a full census.
They are based on sampling methods of various kinds with
varying degrees of reliability but a much higher degree of
reliability than mere projections, but obviously a lower
degree of reliability than a full census.

MR. MORRIS: I will just see, while we have got those documents
open, if there is anything I wanted to refer to.

If we go back in that document -- if we can call that the
"Tosi document" -- to the map on page 11 and I have a
better copy larger size for the Judge. (Handed)

This is a map by Joseph Tosi, 1969?
       A. Which I do not have here, incidentally.

  Q. Have you not got a copy? It should be in the documents you
       have?

  MR. RAMPTON: I can explain.

MR. MORRIS: It is actually in those packages.
       A. Thank you. I prefer the A3 in any case.

  Q. Yes. The first question, the broad question is: Would
this be a generally accepted summary of life zones
       characteristics for Costa Rica?
       A. Yes, it would. It would be regarded as among the high
of all the data that one finds on these kinds of issues in
relation to Central America in general, and Costa Rica in
