Day 241 - 26 Apr 96 - Page 03
MS. STEEL: What happened then was at a subsequent hearing this
statement got handed in by accident. It was actually the
initial draft and it had errors in it.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Then I have got something which has a dotted
line across the top and "Statement of David Rose, 12
Holmfield."

MS. STEEL: Yes, that is the one. That is the one that we are
going to be relying on.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Right.

MS. STEEL: It is a simple one word statement which is quite
clearly a mistake.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Tell me where the difference with them is
because I glanced across them and I thought they were the
same.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: They are basically the same apart from in the
second paragraph: "I took notes of my conversation with
Miss Bensilum". The one ---

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes.

MS. STEEL: -- we were going to read out in court is the one
that was corrected to -- "there were three"; in the other
version it says "there were two".

MR. JUSTICE BELL: OK. I had had marked in the margin "first
telecon", "second telecon" and "third telecon". So I had
not been thrown by that.

MS. STEEL: Yes, it was noticed that she said she phoned a
third time and the second to last paragraph, and that is
why we noticed it was a mistake.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Thank you very much.

MS. STEEL: I will read through your statement. If there is
anything you want to clarify or anything that is incorrect,
then if you can stop me at the end of the paragraph and ---
A. OK.

Q. -- make any corrections: "Statement of David Rose. I am a
reporter with employed by The Observer. I have worked
there as Home Affairs Correspondent for two-and-a-half
years. Previously I worked for the Guardian for seven
years". Are you still at The Observer?
A. Yes.

Q. What is your present position?
A. Chief Reporter.

Q. Right. "On 5th February 1993 I telephone McDonald's press
officer in London, Ms Eadie Bensilum, and asked her
questions about the purchase by McDonald's of beef from
Montecillos SA. I had seen documents disclosing this
purchase.
