Day 194 - 01 Dec 95 - Page 10

  Q. Coming back to the union matter, was your father an
official in the Transport and General Workers Union?
       A. No, he has never been a member of the Transport and
General Workers Union and he has never been an official of
       any trade union.

  Q. Did you ever tell anybody in management or anyone at the
store that your father was an official in the Transport and
       General Workers Union?
       A. I did not, no.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: It is hardly likely to affect my view of
matters whether your father was involved with unions or
not, but you say he has never been a member of the TGWU or
an official of a trade union. Is he, in fact, a member of
       another union?
       A. He is -----

  Q. You need not say ---
       A. OK.

  Q. -- what it is, because people join unions as a matter of
       course ---
       A. That is right.

  Q. -- in this country.
       A. My father has worked in local government for the last
       25 years.

  Q. He is a member of NALGO, is he, or something like that?
       A. Previously; and it is now called UNISON, that union.

  Q. I am a bit out of date.
       A. But he does not even attend the meetings.

  Q. But is it the successor to NALGO?
       A. UNISON is, yes.

MR. MORRIS: So could you explain the situation, then, that
happened when you started to be interested in joining a
       union?

MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, I am a bit cautious about this, because
what your Lordship gave leave for was for Mr. Morris to ask
about the interest shown by others, and about
Mr. Nicholson's visit. Mr. Morris ------

MR. JUSTICE BELL: All I need to know is Mr. Sutcliffe's
evidence about how much interest was actually shown by crew
at East Ham, by his account, and what happened at this
meeting (supposing there was a meeting and Mr. Sutcliffe
       attended it).

MR. MORRIS: (To the witness): Can you explain -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: From a point the view, the overview of this
case, it is part of what might be seen as a sequence of
meetings at Hackney, East Ham and Liverpool. I want to
know what happened at the meeting at East Ham.
