Day 174 - 17 Oct 95 - Page 06

MR. JUSTICE BELL: There are press cuttings at the front.

MR. MORRIS: It is the top one.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: One is "McDonald's German connections".

MR. MORRIS: It is the one that says "Will McDonald's be
prosecuted?"

MR. JUSTICE BELL: That is about five sheets in, Mr. Mehigan.

THE WITNESS: Under tab 6, is that correct?

MR. MORRIS: I am not sure you have got the right one.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Divider 6, which is right near the back of the
bundle. Do you have a divider 6?
A. There are actually two divider 6s.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Could you get me the bundle, please?
Divider 6 is completely different to my divider 6. That is
the document which Mr. Morris wants you to look at, but the
layout of divider 6 is completely different to mine; it has
dividers within divider 6, and it starts with a different
document. So perhaps some check can be made in due
course.

MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, I have revisited this on a number of
occasions. May I ask that we proceed in the correct manner
so far as this part of the cross-examination is concerned;
that is to say, Mr. Morris puts questions instead of
reading out chunks of inadmissible newspaper cuttings?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Remember what the procedure is. Put your
suggestion; if you do not like the answer, without
identifying the document, ask Mr. Mehigan to read it and
ask him if that changes his mind at all.

MR. MORRIS: I was going to do that. (To the witness) In fact,
if you could just read the document, I would appreciate
it. It is not very long.
A. (Pause) Yes.

Q. In your statement, you said that you were inspected by the
Ministry of Labour. You have said that just before you
commented on something happening in July 1979 at that
meeting with Mr. Michael Mullen. You said -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Let us have the page and the paragraph.

MR. MORRIS: It is page 5, in the middle of the paragraph.
(To the witness) So was that visit by the Ministry of
Labour as a result of public criticism or complaints?
A. I cannot recollect.

Q. How often would the Ministry of Labour visit to check up
on, for example, possible violations of youth employment
laws?
A. Not very often, from memory.
