Day 169 - 04 Oct 95 - Page 12
concentrate in your cross-examination on that aspect of it.

MS. STEEL: The thing about the number of probationers dismissed
was just because yesterday Mr. Richards said that they
dismissed six employees a year, or something like that, and
it sounded like it included probationers and, anyway, it is
now evident that it did not ---

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I think ---

MS. STEEL: -- which was relevant to what Mr. Logan said.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: -- I have said what I have just said in an
attempt to help you. You can accept it or ignore it.
Whatever you think of it that, I think you should put to
Mr. Atkinson (sic) that nothing was done about the
splitting of grease troughs for reasons of expense.

MS. STEEL: I was going to anyway.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I will put this -----

MS. STEEL: I am going to deal with it but I just have to
collect my thoughts for a second. (To the witness): The
grills and grease troughs that are used in the store are of
a standard design, are they not?
A. There are two or three standards design and they are
one of them, that is right.

Q. Two or three. You said that other stores had a similar
problem?
A. Did I say that?

Q. I think you did, that some stores had a similar problem?
A. I said I knew of problems that had arisen, perhaps, in
other stores, but having never worked in another store for
a significant amount of time .....

Q. You do not know, OK.
A. Only having spoken with Managers from other stores,
yes.

Q. Did you report this problem with the grease trough to Head
Office or -----
A. I think the problem with the grease trough generally is
that they are made of stainless steel. The main problems
come, the main leakage, as it were, would come when someone
cleans them each night and then drops them on the floor so
that they bend. That is the main problem we have with the
grease troughs not being in perfect working order.

If you knock them together when you are spraying them, or
if you drop them on the floor, if you bang them in any way,
then the stainless steel becomes dented and it becomes
difficult to run them on the guide runners. That is the
normal problem with the grease troughs.

Q. Was there any reason why you could not just get a
replacement grease trough?
A. We have done on several occasions.
