Day 168 - 03 Oct 95 - Page 18
and it would depend on whichever of us were in on the
particular day when the schedule was done.

Q. So the schedule was done by somebody else and then you
looked at the overall picture to add up the total number of
hours that had been scheduled to check that it fitted in
with the targets that the store had?
A. Yes, and I would also check that any requests made by
the crew were carried across onto the schedule. For
instance, if John Gore said that he did not want to work
Saturday night, I would make sure that the scheduling
Manager had taken that into account and that he did not
work Saturday night.

Q. He would not turn up, would he, or he might not turn up?
A. He might turn up, he might not. He might have
somewhere to go, but all I am saying is that I made sure
that the requests in the request book tallied with the
schedule. I effectively just went over what the scheduling
Manager had done as well. The same as if I did the
schedule, it would be the responsibility of another Manager
to check it.

Q. So when the schedule was chucked in front of you, placed in
front of you -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Just pause because there is no basis for
suggesting "chucked in front of you".

MR. MORRIS: No, all right, "placed in front of you". I am not
making any comment, I am just saying.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Put it in a -----

MR. MORRIS: I put it in a graphic way.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: It does not because, you see, a word like
that indicates it is just cast onto the desk and swept up a
moment later.

MR. MORRIS (To the witness): Sorry, when the schedule was
completed it would be shown to you?
A. It would be.

Q. In what circumstances would that occur, just give me a
general .....
A. For instance, if the schedule was completed on a
Wednesday morning, the scheduling Manager would take three,
four, five hours, however long that particular person took
to do the schedule. If it was Ian, he would take, say,
three and a half hours to do the schedule. He would then
bring it upstairs to me. He would do whatever I was doing
before that work, whether it was working the floor or
running the shift, and I would spend a couple of hours
checking the schedule.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Are you senior to the other two or have you
been a First Assistant for longer?
A. No, myself and Ian are the two senior Firsts. Geoff is
the junior one of the three.
