Day 144 - 28 Jun 95 - Page 61
MS. STEEL: Which is what I said.

MR. RAMPTON: No, twice without the "give".

MS. STEEL: When I read out I read out the complete quote.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Do not worry about it.

MS. STEEL: I do get fed up with Mr. Rampton making stupid
comments the whole day long.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Just calm down. In fact we will all have
five minutes and hope the temperature drops a bit.

(Short Adjournment).

MS. STEEL: Mr. Stein, I just wanted to ask a couple of
questions about the crew turnover figures.
A. OK.

Q. These are worked out on a computer, are they?
A. Yes, they are.

Q. Do you know what information is put into the computer in
order to get these figures?
A. Yes, it is the total number of crew that have worked
during any particular year versus the number of crew that
you have at the end of the year.

Q. Those are the figures that are put in?
A. Yes, in general it is done on an every-month basis and
then they annualise it on a monthly basis.

Q. So this is compared to what the number of crew there are at
the end of the year?
A. Well, the number of crew on board versus the number of
crew that were there during the whole year.

Q. The number of crew on board at what point?
A. We are talking right now about the end of the year.

Q. So say, for example, in October 1989 there is 197 per cent
turnover, what does that mean in terms of ----
A. That means that if the rate were to continue to the
rest of the year, then that would be the rate for the whole
year. If the rate of leaving were to continue for the
whole year that would be the turnover for the year.

Q. So that is how many people left in September compared to
how many people were working in -- sorry, in October
compared to how many people were working at the end of the
year?
A. I think may be confusion is they will do it on a
monthly basis and give you a monthly figure, but most often
they will annualise it on a continual basis throughout the
year. So what I like to look at are annualised figures so
I know where it is along the year, because if you look at
any one month there can be an aberration, if you will, but
if you are looking at a series of months and it is an
annualised kind of thing, you can get a better picture of
