MS. STEEL: It says: "Staffing and retention are closely related
issues. Many problems are the by-products of under
staffing. Under-staffing puts additional pressure on
everyone and results in frustration for management and the
crew. Causes of Turnover: It is crucial to understand the
reasons why people leave McDonald's. Some of the most
significant reasons people give for leaving are poor
treatment", and under that comes lack of recognition, poor
people practices, dissatisfaction with pay, low and/or
infrequent raises. Then there is lack of orientation and
training.
A. Are you reading this for the audience or are you asking
me to read it?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: No, you must not say that. Our way of doing
things in this country is if you want to ask a question
about a document, subject to the document being
inadmissible in its own right where we have to follow a
special procedure, it is read out so that everyone can pay
attention to it before the question is asked. This is
McDonald's own document.
A. I have no problem with the document, my Lord. I did
not understand the procedure.

Q. It has been read several times before.
A. I thought we could just move this along.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Just follow the procedure. Yes, Ms. Steel.

MS. STEEL: Under "Lack of orientation and training" there is no
job enjoyment or satisfaction; no training or job
rotation. Then there is poor working conditions, which
includes faulty or missing equipment and poor uniform
policy. Then there is lack of communication. You would
accept those as some of the most significant reasons for
people leaving?
A. For the percentage that leaves who are unhappy with
McDonald's, and there is obviously a small percentage that,
you know, like jobs and do not like jobs, this is referring
to the fact that retention is important at McDonald's, we
want to keep our people, and it is highlighting to our
managers what could be some of the causes for people
leaving. They are drawing their attention to it so that
those managers will work on these things and make sure that
they are doing the best job possible with their crew.

Q. To the significant reasons for people leaving, as opposed
to, I do not know, something that is insignificant. These
are the significant reasons?
A. They are trying to priorities what the manager should
look at in dealing with his store and his people and make
sure that he has these areas covered as well as he or she
can.

MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, I am not meaning to be difficult but
Ms. Steel has twice misquoted what is actually written
there. "Some of the most significant reasons people 'give'
for leaving".
