Day 144 - 28 Jun 95 - Page 49
A. That is totally untrue. We do care about them.

MR. MORRIS: Talking about pay rises, do a substantial amount of
crew in any store actually stay there for a number of years
and get pay rises?
A. A number -- a large number of crew get pay rises, yes.

Q. But I am saying do a large number of crew stay there for a
considerable time more than a couple of years?
A. Generally, what happens if someone is interested in
making McDonald's a career, we have all of those
promotional opportunities that we have talked about
earlier. If someone really wants to make McDonald's a
career, they move up to being the crew chief, the crew
trainers we talked about, the swing manager, then into
salaried management.

I think we have talked about the fact that 70 per cent of
our store managers came from crew. There was upward
mobility. That is what is anticipated if someone wishes to
make McDonald's a career. Others wish to spend a short
period of time, maybe while they are going to college,
what-have-you, but those who are interested in a career,
generally speaking, although there are there exceptions,
there are some people who want to work part-time a few
hours a week, that is all they want to do, but these who
are interested in full-time employment, or interested in
making McDonald's a career, go up the promotional ladder,
if their abilities allow them.

Q. So what are you saying? Are you saying that people that do
not get promoted basically do not want to stay and walk
out?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: No, that is not what he said.

MR. MORRIS: That is the drift of it. The question
I asked ------

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Are you aiming at pay increases here so you
can get some idea of what proportion get above the starting
rate?

MR. MORRIS: That is one of the things, yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Why not ask a question specifically directed
at that?

THE WITNESS: My Lord, could I ask a question?

MR. MORRIS: Not everybody can become a higher grade. Are you
saying that ---

THE WITNESS: My Lord, could I ask a question?

MR. MORRIS: -- people do not want to remain crew? Are you
saying people do not want to remain -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Just pause for a moment, Mr. Morris. What
did you want to ask?
