Day 144 - 28 Jun 95 - Page 44

substantial amount of employees believe that they are more
often than rarely required to work beyond their schedule.
So, have you taken any action over that?
       A. As I said to you before, when the opinion survey is
done, the management of the store take a look at the
survey. They get additional information to try to
interpret the survey. They set their priorities on what
they would like to improve upon. They talk to the crew
about it. They elicit more opinions from the crew. They
talk with them in crew meetings and they try to make as
good of an environment as they can within the store.

This is something to help create the correct environment,
make McDonald's a pleasant place to work. It is not a
report card that says: If you score this or that, that it
says you are good or bad, in my opinion. It says: Take a
look at all of this; see what it means within the context
of your store and then apply it accordingly in what you
need to do. Our managers put together action plans as a
result of these things to ensure that the people are being
treated as well as they can be treated.

  Q. The reality is the implication of that question is the
practice of requiring your employees to work beyond their
schedule is not just a rare, extreme occurrence, it is
something that is happening more often?
       A. It depends upon ------

  Q. Is that something that worries you?
       A. It depends upon how you interpret the word "rarely",
how an individual interprets the word "rarely". These are
not precise kinds of things. These are asking people for
opinions off the top of their head. This is not a precise
measurement system. This is to give an indication so the
managers can follow through some more.

  Q. If we go down to the "Policies" section, the last but one,
No. 20: "I receive my breaks when due", 65 per cent
internationally are claimed to have agreed with that. Are
you concerned if people do not receive their breaks when
       they are due?
       A. Yes, but I also know that most people do not know when
they are due and when they are not due, so what does it
mean? It just means that there is an indication here --
actually, it is a pretty good score -- of that area, but it
does not mean it is good or bad. You take a look at the
totality of this thing and then you look at what is
actually happening in the store. You talk to your people,
you try to discover if there is a problem or is not a
problem, and you work it accordingly.

You are taking something that is a very positive practice
where we are concerned about our people and trying to make
it into some enormous negative. That is unfair.
Mr. Morris, how many of your employers ever did an opinion
       survey?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: No, you cannot ask him a question.

MR. MORRIS: I would love to respond but I will not.
